(Baonghean.vn) Building wooden fishing boats is a long-standing traditional craft in many coastal districts of Nghe An province. This is a well-established profession that attracts customers from many other provinces and cities.

Nghe An province currently has 63 facilities for building and renovating fishing vessels, concentrated in areas with developed fishing industries such as Quynh Nghia, Tien Thuy - Quynh Luu, Trung Kien shipbuilding village - Nghi Thiet, and especially Hai Chau Shipbuilding Company Limited, Trung Do ward - Vinh City. These shipbuilding facilities have made significant contributions to developing the province's fisheries capacity, building many offshore fishing vessels and creating jobs for a segment of the population. However, shipbuilders are still primarily relying on experience and have not yet applied science and technology to shipbuilding.

Based on that reality, the project "Application of technology in designing wooden fishing vessels in Nghe An province" was approved by the Department of Science and Technology and a contract was signed for its implementation. The project was led by Engineer – Senior Specialist Nguyen Chi Luong (Department of Fisheries Exploitation and Resource Protection), with a implementation period from October 2010 to November 2011.



Shipbuilding in our province is currently based primarily on experience.

The Nghe An Fisheries Exploitation and Protection Sub-Department has investigated and found that the Department of Shipbuilding Engineering - Nha Trang University currently possesses software for designing fishing vessels that meets the requirements for resolving difficulties in shipbuilding. Based on the requirements and criteria set forth, the Project selected the Department of Shipbuilding Engineering, Nha Trang University, as the technology transfer unit. The transferred software is derived from the research results of the Ministry-level project "Research on optimal hull design to meet the diverse needs of Vietnamese fishing vessels" by Dr. Tran Gia Thai, Department of Shipbuilding Engineering, Nha Trang University.

The project organized learning and experience exchange between the technology transfer unit, and conducted two training courses on technology transfer and software for designing wooden fishing vessels with a capacity of 90 to 600 horsepower for 7 people, lasting 15 days, at the Nghe An Fisheries Exploitation and Resource Protection Sub-Department. Ten sets of design models for traditional wooden fishing vessels in Nghe An province with a capacity of 90 to 250 horsepower, corresponding to fishing methods such as trawling, purse seine, gillnet, and trawling, were completed. The design and construction of a new wooden fishing vessel for Mr. Tran Xuan Thu, Dai Bac hamlet, Quynh Long commune, Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province, with a capacity of 500 horsepower, for purse seine fishing, was also implemented. The fishing vessel was designed to meet technical standards, comply with regulations, and was constructed according to regulations. The construction process was checked for safety accuracy, underwent long-distance testing, and the finished product was of high quality, receiving very positive feedback from the local people. After its launch, the ship consistently demonstrated excellent stability, a robust structure, and high operational efficiency during its sea trials. The acceptance committee rated the project as outstanding.

The project has successfully achieved its objectives, content, and the quality requirements of the main product as stipulated in the contract. The software has been installed on the computers as required, is functioning well, and seven staff members have been trained and are proficient in using the transferred software.

The project's success lies in applying scientific and technological advancements to the design of wooden fishing vessels, ensuring accuracy and avoiding mechanical errors compared to previous manual design methods. Using the project's products in the local design of wooden fishing vessels shortens construction time, saves materials and costs, reduces product prices, and provides people with more choices in shipbuilding. Shipbuilding and conversion facilities throughout the province have truly changed their mindset regarding shipbuilding according to design, and the skill level of the workforce has improved. Furthermore, it has enhanced the scientific capacity of the lead agency, state management agencies, and project staff.
