Which messaging app makes the most money from users?
There is no shortage of messaging apps in the world, and the success of each app is often measured by the number of active users using the service. For example, WhatsApp is often considered the “king” of the industry, with 900 million monthly active users. But new data is making people rethink how they measure the success of each messaging app. It is a number that shows how much money the messaging app company makes from its users.

According to data from Activate at the WSJD Live conference on Tuesday (Oct. 20), China's WeChat generates an average revenue per user of $7; KakaoTalk generates $4.24 per user, and Line generates $3.16 per user. Meanwhile, WhatsApp generates $0.06 per user, Viber generates $0.01 per user, and Facebook Messenger generates no revenue from users using its service. That means that while WeChat generates about $4.2 billion from 600 million users and Line has about $632 million from 200 million users, WhatsApp generates only about $54 million from 900 million users.
The big difference is that WhatsApp charges an annual fee while Asian apps like Line and WeChat sell ads, apps, and games embedded into their messaging services. Facebook Messenger has tried selling ads but it seems that these ad packages are currently free. Facebook also has a long list of apps integrated into its messaging service but they don't sell any of them.
According to Activate, the messaging service sector is considered the fastest growing digital “machine” and there is still a lot of “fertile ground” for companies to exploit. According to forecasts, in 2018, messaging applications will have about 1.1 billion new users, of which about 579 million new users are in the Middle East and Africa, and 265 million new users are in Asia.
