Breast cancer - the leading cause of death in women

The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has just issued a warning that the number of people with cancer in the world is increasing significantly, especially breast cancer.

According to IARC's "GLOBOCAN 2012" report, the global cancer incidence rate increased by 11% over a five-year period, reaching 14 million cases in 2012. Of these, 8.2 million people died, an increase of 8.4% from 2008 to 2012.

With the global population and aging population increasing, WHO predicts that by 2025 the number of new cancer cases will increase sharply, reaching 19.3 million people per year.

Also in this report, IARC is particularly concerned about the trend of a significant increase in the number of breast cancer patients.

"GLOBOCAN 2012" stated that in 2012 alone, 1.7 million women were diagnosed with this fatal disease, an increase of 20% from 2008 with a 14% increase in mortality rate.

IARC said breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women, especially in less developed countries, with 522,000 deaths in 2012.

According to the cancer agency, lifestyle changes typical of industrialized nations have resulted in an increase in cancers linked to reproductive, dietary and hormonal risk factors.

The incidence of the disease in developed countries remains the highest, but the mortality rate in developing countries is relatively high due to lack of early detection and timely treatment.

IARC also called for more attention to preventive measures to compensate for lifestyle changes that are making breast cancer the leading cause of death in women.

Speaking to the press, IARC Director Christopher Wild affirmed that the urgent need in cancer control is to develop more effective and less expensive solutions in the process of early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in women in less developed countries.

Based on information on 28 types of cancer in 184 countries, IARC determined that the most commonly diagnosed cancers in both men and women were lung cancer (13%), breast cancer (11.9%) and colon and rectal cancer (9.7%). Meanwhile, the most common causes of death were lung, liver and stomach cancers./.
