Drinking coffee reduces the risk of multiple sclerosis

Drinking coffee not only helps keep your mind alert but also brings many health benefits.

A new study, conducted by scientists at Johns Hopkins University (USA), found that people who regularly drink coffee can also help reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS).

Regular caffeine intake reduces the risk of developing Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and helps protect against MS, supporting the idea that caffeine can help protect and enhance brain effects, said study author Ellen Mowry, MD, of Johns Hopkins University.

In the study, scientists reviewed and reanalyzed two previous studies: a Swedish study of 1,629 people with MS and 2,807 healthy people, and a US study of 1,159 people with MS and 1,172 healthy people.

Researchers looked at coffee consumption in people with MS between 1 and 5 years before MS symptoms began and compared it to coffee consumption in people without MS over the same time period.

The study also took into account other MS risk factors, such as age, sex, smoking, body mass index and sun exposure.

The study found that compared with people who drank at least six cups of coffee a day in the year before MS symptoms appeared, non-coffee drinkers had about a 1.5 times higher risk of developing MS. And people who drank moderate amounts of coffee in the 5-10 years before MS symptoms appeared also had similar benefits.

MS is a disease caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the protective layers around nerve fibers in the brain and spine. Symptoms in people with MS can include muscle weakness, paralysis, vision problems, and difficulty with balance and coordination, researchers say.
