The Vatican news agency said there were preliminary agreements “regarding the dispatch to Kiev of the head of the Italian Bishops' Conference - Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti - Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches”.
It is known that the Holy See, through the Embassies of Russia and Ukraine, has proposed to Moscow and Kiev to create an opportunity for the Pope's special envoys to meet, in order to discuss the possibility of opening a path to negotiations leading to a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. Moscow and Kiev in a provisional response have declared their readiness in principle, but it is not yet clear whether two special envoys will meet the parties in parallel or only through one person.
Returning from a trip to Hungary on April 30, Pope Francis announced that the Vatican is on a mission to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, but that details of this cannot be made public at this time.
In early May, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, announced that Russia and Ukraine had been informed of the Vatican's peace initiative.
Moscow has repeatedly indicated that it is ready to negotiate, but Kiev has said “no” with a very firm and decisive stance, and Ukrainian President Zelensky himself said earlier at the G20 that “there will be no Minsk-3”.
The West has also turned a blind eye to Kiev's repeated refusal to negotiate. Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that Moscow is ready to consider Kiev's proposals for a solution, taking into account the Russian proposals and the specific situation on the ground, but the Ukrainian side is not interested in this.
