Before entering the final match of Group A, the Vietnamese team only needed one point to enter the semi-finals. Compared to the Philippines team, which won both matches - including a resounding 4-0 victory over championship candidate Indonesia, Coach Miura's team was not rated higher.
However, with the Japanese strategist's wisdom in using his players, with his spirit and fiery attacking style, the home team played brilliantly and won 3-1. Hoang Thinh, Minh Tuan and Thanh Luong scored in turn to help the Vietnamese team take a three-goal lead, before the away team scored one goal.
This result helps coach Miura and his team enter the semi-finals with the top position in the group, and avoid Thailand. The team will play the first leg away on December 7 and the second leg at home on December 11.
Mr. Gu also added that VFF only "injects doping money" when they feel the players deserve it, but does not offer bonuses before matches, including semi-finals or finals, "because that can easily cause players to become spoiled and ask for favors."
This is similar to the view that VFF President Le Hung Dung said before the tournament: "We are determined not to let the situation happen where players play when they have money, and when they don't have money, they play aimlessly. We have agreed not to play the bait game, using bonuses to lure players. Of course, professional football cannot be without money, and VFF is not short of money. We just want to change the way we do things, not to offer bonuses in advance like before. The players can rest assured, if they play well, the money will come, no one will mistreat them."
