The owner of the first steel-hulled ship in Da Nang has decided to return the nearly 12 billion VND ship to the shipbuilding company in Nha Trang because the ship has been lying on shore in a damaged state for nearly a year.

Recently, Mr. Le Van Sang (34 years old, residing in Hai Chau district, Da Nang), co-owner of the steel-hulled ship named Sang Fish 01, recently decided to return the ship to Nha Trang Shipbuilding Company Limited (Khanh Hoa). |
The ship was launched in July 2014, with a capacity of 750CV, more than 25 m long, nearly 8 m wide, 3.6 m high, displacement of more than 180 tons, and a total investment of nearly 12 billion VND. |
Mr. Sang said that on the first trip, the ship's winch broke and had to be repaired at a cost of about 500 million VND. "The ship was very sturdy at first. But after 10 trips at sea, the ship broke down 4 times and the business was not profitable," Mr. Sang said. The ship has been on shore for nearly a year now, with many rust spots on the bow. |
This ship was contracted by Mr. Sang and his brother-in-law Phan Be to be built at Nha Trang Shipbuilding Company Limited. Sang Fish 01 has modern equipment such as an Icom machine worth over 100 million VND, GPS to accurately locate coordinates for fishing and operating in legal areas at sea. The time the ship owner must pay back the company is 6 years. "I can't make a profit so I don't have money to pay the factory, now I have to return the ship," Mr. Sang said sadly as he looked at the ship exposed to the sun and rain, its hull deteriorating. |
Many unused parts of the ship were left lying around. According to Mr. Sang, the ship vibrated more than the wooden boat he previously owned, making it difficult for seafarers to work, including logistics or purse seine fishing. |
Mr. Sang said that during the sea trips, in addition to the winch failure, the ship also had engine failure. |
"I contacted the company to return the ship. It was their property, so they agreed to take it. The old and degraded hull will be refurbished, and this is not difficult," he said. |
Where the hull touches the waterline, there are layers of barnacles clinging tightly. According to Mr. Sang, the ship was built based on a model ship of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. "This is the first model. The following models have had coordination between the ship owner and the manufacturer to unify the design, overcoming the limitations that Sang Fish 01 had," said Mr. Sang. |
Much of the ship's machinery had been disassembled and was strewn about in the cabin. |
The control system was covered with a layer of sea salt. Many fishermen expressed regret that many modern devices had to stay ashore with this ship. |
The squid fishing lights have many broken bulbs and the wires are cut into pieces. |
The buoy and net system were damaged due to long-term storage, lying scattered all over the walkway around the cabin. In addition to Mr. Sang, the owner of the Hoang Anh 01 ship in Quang Ngai also returned the ship to Nha Trang Shipbuilding Company Limited. The owner of the Hoang Anh 01 ship returned the ship about 2 months ago. |
Mr. Sang owns a fishing group that buys seafood in Hoang Sa. Instead of letting his steel-hulled ship stay ashore, the ship owner uses the deck space to let fishermen weave nets. |
"I am very sad because I had high hopes for this steel-hulled ship, but due to objective reasons, I could not do the job. Through this ship, I also gained a lot of experience to decide to build a larger steel-hulled ship, according to Decree 67 of the Government," said Mr. Sang, adding that his new steel-hulled ship was built at a factory in Ho Chi Minh City, with a capacity of 814 CV, and will be launched next June. |
