(Baonghean.vn) - Raising pigs on small farms in residential areas is at high risk of disease outbreaks. In fact, 4 outbreaks in Nghe An province recently occurred in small-scale farms.

In March, African swine fever broke out in four outbreaks in Quynh Luu and Tan Ky districts. All four outbreaks occurred in small-scale farms.

Mr. Dang Van Minh - Deputy of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said: The reason why African swine fever occurs in small-scale farms is because these farms have not applied biotechnology in their barns, disease prevention work is not good, and the origin of the purchased piglets is unknown. In addition, many people go in and out of the barn area every day, and the feed for the pigs is not guaranteed...

The same goes for pig farms, where barns have not been scientifically invested, the risk of African swine fever in particular and other diseases is very high.

On the contrary, large-scale pig farms have applied biosafety technology in their barn systems; imported pigs have clear origins; disease prevention work is carried out regularly. In particular, outsiders are limited to the maximum extent in the barn area; daily pig feed is guaranteed, with clear origin and source. Therefore, large farms avoid the spread of disease.

Therefore, Mr. Dang Van Minh recommends that, at a time when African swine fever is complicated and unpredictable, farmers need to keep the area inside and outside the barn clean, spray disinfectants periodically once a week. Do not buy floating piglets on the market; all daily pig feed must be cooked. Farmers should not go to areas with epidemics...

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Nghe An currently has 135 farms and 849 pig farms. The total pig herd of the province is currently 920 thousand.

During the two days from March 30 to 31, there were no new outbreaks of African swine fever in the province; only 5 pig samples in Nam Dan and Dien Chau districts tested negative for African swine fever.
