Why was Mr. Yang Jiechi elected to the Chinese Politburo?
(Baonghean.vn) - Diplomatic experts say that the election of Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi to the Politburo, the top authority of the Communist Party of China (CPC), is a clear sign of General Secretary and President Xi Jinping's ambition for China as a rising global power.

According to experts, the move not only recognizes Mr. Yang's capabilities and his personal contributions to Mr. Xi Jinping's assertive foreign policy, but also creates a boost for Beijing's diplomatic influence, as the country seeks to expand its interests and influence in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
Expert Bonnie Glaser of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington (USA) commented: "This step may indicate a recognition that foreign affairs play an increasingly important role in promoting China's interests, and is no longer considered a low position."
Meanwhile, Evan Medeiros, CEO of political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, called Yang's elevation to the Politburo "a historic development for China's foreign policy." He said: "It shows Xi's emphasis on foreign affairs and his desire to make China play a leading role in Asia and globally."

Other observers say Mr. Yang’s promotion is a sign that top leaders in Beijing want to ensure continuity in foreign policy, which has seen a dramatic shift over the past decade toward increased assertiveness amid international skepticism and concern about the intentions behind China’s rise.
In addition, China expert Dibyesh Anand of the University of Westminster in London said that Mr. Yang has practical experience with the US, Japan and India, and if he maintains this approach, it will be a harbinger of smooth relations between China and other powers.
Previously, on the morning of October 25, at the first session, the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China elected a 25-member Politburo, headed by General Secretary Xi Jinping./.
