The increased heart rate requires additional oxygen, which leads to shortness of breath. When you climb stairs, you’re essentially doing a lunge while fighting gravity. That level of exercise is relatively strenuous for most of us.
If you are training hard for an event like a marathon, climbing stairs adds to your training load. As a result, you become exhausted. Twenty steps of walking is easy, but 20 flights of stairs is different. It is similar to a high-intensity aerobic exercise, so even if you are in good shape, you will still be out of breath.
The best way to improve shortness of breath when climbing stairs is to exercise. Choose lower body strength exercises such as split squats, lunges, or reverse lunges to mimic the movement of your body when climbing stairs. Over time, you will get used to it and become less short of breath.
