Suspect Huu Can Tran was seen pointing the gun at Tsay and he fought back fiercely. After a struggle, Tsay successfully took the gun from suspect Huu Can Tran's hand and was hit hard in the face by the suspect.
The suspect then continued to run after Tsay and tried to grab the gun, but was unsuccessful. Tsay was seen pointing at the suspect, seemingly in a warning, before the suspect left. Tsay then held the suspect's gun with one hand and pulled out his cell phone with the other.
"There was a moment when I froze, because I thought I was going to die, it felt like my life was going to end at that moment. But then I realized I had to disarm the suspect. I had to do something to protect everyone as well as myself," Tsay recounted.
Tsay, whose grandparents owned the Lai Lai nightclub, was unaware that the suspect he encountered had, about 20 minutes earlier, killed at least 11 people and injured nine others at the nightclub in Monterey Park.
Tsay has been hailed as a hero for his bravery in confronting the suspected shooter. Officials say they believe the suspect intended to carry out a similar massacre in Alhambra but Tsay stopped him, saving lives.
