Speaking at the meeting to introduce the draft Resolution, Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations Le Hoai Trung emphasized the increasingly important position and role of the IAEA in promoting the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and moving towards complete and thorough disarmament of nuclear weapons.

The Ambassador highly appreciated the IAEA's performance over the past year in all areas, such as nuclear energy application, technical cooperation, technology transfer, ensuring nuclear safety and security and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Also according to Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, in recent times, the IAEA has played a central role in supporting developing countries, including Vietnam, to improve their capacity to research, develop and use nuclear energy and technology for peaceful purposes, making positive contributions to socio-economic development as well as promoting the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Over the years, Vietnam has been an active member of the IAEA and has made many important contributions to this organization. Vietnam's election as Chairman of the IAEA Board of Governors has created favorable conditions for Vietnam to contribute more to the implementation of the IAEA's objectives, while demonstrating Vietnam's consistent policy in promoting the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and moving towards complete and thorough nuclear disarmament.

On this occasion, Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, on behalf of the United Nations member states, congratulated Mr. Yukiya Amano on his re-appointment as IAEA Director General for a second four-year term.

At the end of the plenary session, the General Conference unanimously adopted the draft resolution on the IAEA’s performance report, introduced by Vietnam. The draft resolution, chaired by Vietnam, was based on the active contributions of the co-authors from 78 member states.

The IAEA was established in 1957 and plays a central role in international cooperation to promote the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, improve people's lives, ensure energy security, food security and environmental protection./.
