Vietnam actively contributes to international issues

The UN Secretary-General highly appreciated Vietnam's cooperation and strong support for the UN and its efforts for regional peace and security.

On September 26, US time, within the framework of his working trip to attend the 66th UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

At the meeting, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highly appreciated Vietnam's cooperation and strong support for the UN, including the active implementation of the One UN initiative on enhancing the effectiveness of development cooperation. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Vietnam, together with ASEAN and related countries, for recent new results in implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and hoped that the parties would continue their efforts for regional peace and security.

The UN Secretary-General also expressed his hope that Vietnam will continue to play an active role in other international and regional issues, including the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012.

Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh affirmed that with a positive and proactive spirit of international integration, as a reliable partner and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam will continue to make contributions to the common concerns of the international community and the United Nations; and strive for peace and stability in the region.

Minister Pham Binh Minh also introduced Vietnam's socio-economic development plan for the next 5 years, and wished to continue receiving support from UN organizations in the implementation of this plan, in line with Vietnam's priorities.

On the same day, Minister Pham Binh Minh held bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Canada, the United States, Russia and Slovenia. During the meetings, the two sides discussed specific steps to promote bilateral relations.

Minister Pham Binh Minh also had meetings with the Director General of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The leaders of these organizations affirmed their commitment to effectively implementing the cooperation program with Vietnam in the 2012-2016 period./.
