Vietnam attends UN Human Rights Council Summit

On March 3, in Geneva, Switzerland, the opening ceremony of the 25th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council took place.

In the context of human rights continuing to be a concern of countries and international public opinion, the Conference attracted the participation of many leaders from more than 80 countries and international organizations.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, and this was the first time Vietnam attended a high-level meeting as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2014-2016 term.

According to a VNA correspondent in Geneva, the main topics discussed at the 25th regular session include reviewing and evaluating the work and activities of the Human Rights Council; protecting and promoting the rights of immigrants; the rights of persons with disabilities, with a focus on the right to access education for persons with disabilities; promoting and protecting the space for civil society activities; the rights of children; and the prevention of genocide.

The Human Rights Council, composed of 47 member states representing all regions, elected for a three-year term, is the United Nations' primary and most important body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights around the world.

Along with Vietnam, other members of the Human Rights Council in this 25th session include Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States, Venezuela...

In addition to the High-level Meeting, the Human Rights Council also held three high-level debates on migrants' rights, the death penalty and defensive approaches within the United Nations system to human rights.

As a member of the Human Rights Council, Vietnam proactively participates actively to contribute to the common work of the Council, closely coordinates with member countries to enhance constructive and responsible contributions to human rights issues of concern to the international community; actively promotes dialogue, international cooperation and a balanced, comprehensive and holistic approach to human rights issues; contributes to improving the effectiveness of the Human Rights Council and other United Nations human rights mechanisms.

In addition to the official meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh also held a series of bilateral meetings with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua Milano; Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Hirotaka Ishihara; and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anders Johnsson.

In addition to demonstrating responsibility for the common work of the United Nations Human Rights Council, this is also an opportunity to promote bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and partner countries as well as international organizations.
