Statistics from Kaspersky Lab show that the top three sources of spam in the world are China (23%), the US (19.1%) and South Korea (12.8%). Vietnam ranked 7th with 2.95%, down from January's 3.1%.

Spam reports for February 2014 showed a surge in malicious attachments in emails sent from women seeking to make friends on Valentine's Day.

Some attackers even lure email recipients with pornographic images that are allegedly archived and attached to messages. There are also a number of malicious emails that mimic fake notifications from popular social media sites, including Facebook.

Spam in email traffic increased 4.2% in February compared to the previous month, averaging 69.9%. However, this is 1.2% lower than February 2013.

Scammers typically target social media sites (27.3%), email services (19.34%) and online payment institutions (16.73%). Kaspersky Lab experts also came across a fake message claiming to be from the Malaysian bank HongLeong.

“Phishing emails using the names of major financial and e-payment organizations from different countries are actively being spread by cybercriminals in an attempt to steal personal financial information. A successful attack often gives hackers access to the victim’s personal accounts on banking websites,” said Tatyana Shcherbakova, Senior Spam Analyst, Kaspersky Lab.
