Ministry of Health report on the first case of infection with the Omicron variant. |
The report stated: On December 19, 2021, 108 Military Central Hospital received 01 case of passenger KVHM on BAMBOO AIRWAY flight QH9028 from the UK to Vietnam. Upon arrival at Noi Bai airport (evening of December 19, 2021), the passenger had a positive rapid test result for SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Passengers were transported by specialized vehicles from the airport to the quarantine area for COVID-19 cases at the 108 Military Central Hospital and were isolated in a private room in the accommodation area. The Hospital's Department of Molecular Biology performed a SARS-CoV-2 test using the RT-PCR method with a positive result of CT:16.52.
With the epidemiological factor of patient K.VH.M returning from the UK, on December 20, 2021, the Hospital conducted genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 infected in this patient using the new generation sequencing method using Oxford Nanopore technology (ONT), the result was suspected of being infected with the Omicron variant.
However, due to mutationsOmicroncontains up to 36 mutations in the spike protein, including some point mutations and deletion mutations in this sequencing that are still unclear. Therefore, on December 21, 2021, the Hospital continued to collect samples and re-sequence the patient KVHM. The results determined that the patient carried the Omicron variant.
This is the first case of infection with the Omicron variant recorded in our country from an immigrant, who was quarantined and promptly managed upon entry./.
