Vietnam records first sub-variant BA.2.74 of Omicron
On the afternoon of August 17, the Department of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health, announced that in Vietnam, a new sub-variant BA.2.74 of Omicron was recorded. Thus, the country has recorded fast-spreading sub-variants such as BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.74, BA.2.12.1.
According to the Department of Preventive Medicine, the COVID-19 epidemic continues to develop complicatedly. In the world, the Omicron variant is dominating over other variants; in which sub-variants such as BA.4, BA.5 have been recorded, and most recently, the second-generation sub-variants of the Omicron variant such as BA.2.74, BA.2.75, BA.2.76, sub-variants have the ability to spread faster than the original variant and can increase the number of cases again.
In Vietnam, the new sub-variant BA.2.74 was first recorded in report No. 2233/BVBM-KHTH dated August 8, 2022 of Bach Mai Hospital. Thus, the country has recorded sub-variants BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.74, BA.2.12.1, especially recently, the whole country recorded an average of about 2,000 new cases per day, the number of cases is tending to increase again.

To continue to be proactiveCOVID-19 preventionIn order to effectively implement the above measures in the coming time, the Department of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Health continues to request localities to comply with the information reporting regime and fully declare COVID-19 cases (group A infectious diseases) immediately after diagnosis within 24 hours as prescribed by the Ministry of Health (Department of Preventive Medicine) to promptly report to the leaders of the Ministry of Health, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, and the Prime Minister.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, in the past 7 days, the country had 14,490 new COVID-19 cases, of which the peak day had nearly 3,000 cases, the highest in more than 3 months in our country.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, Vietnam has had 11,370,462 infections, ranking 12th out of 227 countries and territories, while with the rate of infections per 1 million people, Vietnam ranks 112th out of 227 countries and territories (on average, there are 114,631 infections per 1 million people).
To date, the total number of people with COVID-19 in our country who have recovered is: 10,035,040 cases; Among the patients being monitored and supervised, there are 99 cases of oxygen breathing, including: Oxygen breathing via mask: 90 cases; High flow oxygen breathing HFNC: 5 cases; Invasive mechanical ventilation: 4 cases.
However, after comparison and review, the Department of Preventive Medicine would like to make the following correction: in addition to sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5, Vietnam has recorded sub-variant BA.2.74, not sub-variant BA.2.75 as reported in the official dispatch.
