9-month picture: sales pace and global position

Cumulative sales of more than 1.9 million units in the first nine months of the year reflect stable demand in the two-wheeled vehicle market. The average consumption rate of about 291 vehicles per hour shows that motorbikes are still the main means of transportation in urban areas. Although the third quarter recorded a decrease of 9.37% compared to the same period last year, the market size is still among the top in the world.

Accelerated electrification: brands, products and ratings

Honda and Yamaha keep pace, VinFast accelerates

Data collected by Motorcycles Data shows that Honda and Yamaha are the two names with the best sales in Vietnam. VinFast grew 447% compared to the same period last year, rising to third place in the entire market and temporarily leading the electric motorbike segment.

In addition to the new electric vehicle models of VinFast and Yadea, Honda has joined the game with its first two electric motorbike models. Domestic electric vehicle brands such as Selex Motors, Dat Bike and DKBike have added more options, contributing to expanding the user base for pure electric two-wheelers.

The return of Lambretta and the electric car roadmap

Lambretta has just returned to Vietnam and displayed a pure electric scooter concept called Lambretta Elettra. This return shows that the hybrid scooter segment with electrification is getting attention, but commercialization still depends on the company's plans and market conditions.

Energy infrastructure: battery swapping stations could decide the race

In addition to public charging stations, the battery swapping system is likely to become an important factor shaping the competitive outcome in the electric motorbike segment. This model is suitable for the short travel habits, high density of stops and the need for quick rotation of urban users.

  • Selex Motors has rolled out a battery swapping station network that is described as quite extensive.
  • VinFast announced plans to open 150,000 battery swap stations.
  • Honda and TMT Motors also plan to develop a battery swap system.

Coverage and compatibility between battery standards, along with operating costs, could be key competitive variables in the coming period. The issue of standardization and infrastructure scale will determine the user experience: fast, reliable, and cost-effective battery swapping.

Short-term outlook: large scale, intense competition

The third quarter recorded a 9.37% year-on-year decrease, but the cumulative volume still exceeded 1.9 million vehicles in 9 months, showing a sustainable demand base. In the short term, the race between gasoline and electric vehicles takes place on many levels: products, prices, service networks and especially energy infrastructure.

While Honda and Yamaha continue to maintain their strength in the traditional product range, electric vehicle brands such as VinFast and Yadea are accelerating, exploiting the advantages of usage costs and connectivity technology. The participation of names such as Lambretta, along with the direction of Selex Motors, Dat Bike, DKBike, will enrich the 2-wheel vehicle ecosystem in Vietnam.

Overall, available data shows that Vietnam remains one of the most vibrant motorcycle markets in the world, while emerging as a bright spot for electric motorcycles thanks to rapid growth and investment in battery swapping infrastructure.
