Vietnam is among the fastest growing diabetes cases in the world.
The above information was given at a workshop on diabetes in the context of global health concerns, jointly organized by the Ministry of Health and the Danish Embassy in Vietnam, on the morning of May 29.
According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death; the 4th leading cause of death from non-communicable diseases and the 2nd leading cause of blindness in adults.
Vietnam is one of the countries with the fastest growing rates of diabetes in the world. It is estimated that there are currently more than 5 million people in Vietnam with diabetes, of which only about 37% are diagnosed and only 7% achieve treatment goals and live without complications.

Diabetes is increasing globally and has become one of the major challenges to health and development of countries in the 21st century. Globalization and urbanization have impacted unhealthy lifestyle changes, mainly unhealthy nutrition, lack of physical activity, overweight, obesity, etc., causing the rate of diabetes to increase rapidly.
Diabetes has been, is and will always be a burden on the socio-economic development of any country due to its prevalence and the serious consequences it brings; especially the many dangerous complications leading to disability or death due to late detection and treatment.
Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen said that the Ministry of Health proposed and the Prime Minister approved the National Target Program on Diabetes Prevention in 2008. Currently, Vietnam and Denmark have a 3-year public-private partnership called the "Diabetes Care Program in Vietnam 2013-2015" to address the increasing burden of diabetes in Vietnam.
