After 2020, Vietnam will build a new railway line with train speeds from 160 km/h to 200 km/h.

The Prime Minister has just approved the railway development strategy until 2020, with a vision to 2050. Accordingly, the transport sector will focus on upgrading existing railway lines, prioritizing the modernization of the North-South route to achieve train speeds of 80km/h-90km/h for passenger trains and 50km/h-60km/h for freight trains.

In the first phase, the industry will research and build new high-speed railways, 1,435m-gauge double-track railways, electrification on the North-South axis, and prepare to build sections with high transportation demand such as Hanoi - Vinh and Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang.

The railway industry will exploit the entire Yen Vien - Pha Lai - Ha Long - Cai Lan route, research and build new routes Hanoi - Lao Cai, Hanoi - Hai Phong, Hanoi - Dong Dang, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau, Saigon - Can Tho, Hai Phong - Lach Huyen and routes connecting to major seaports and industrial parks.

From 2020 to 2030, the transport sector will build a railway system with train speeds of 160km/h-200km/h, double-track with a gauge of 1,435m, and upgrade infrastructure to be able to operate high-speed trains of 350km/h in the future.

The Prime Minister also approved the vision plan to 2050 to complete the 1,435 m gauge high-speed double-track railway along the entire North-South axis; after 2050, a 350 km/h high-speed train will be operated; the Central Highlands railway and the Trans-Asia railway will be completed...

With the above strategy, the railway industry is expected to meet at least 5%-8% of the passenger transport market share and 5%-6% of the freight transport market share; meeting more than 30% of the urban passenger transport market share in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
