Vietnam reaffirms policy of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and disarmament
The annual session of the United Nations Disarmament Committee (UNDC) is taking place in New York, USA and is expected to last until April 22. This session focuses on discussing two main contents: nuclear weapons and outer space issues from the perspective of disarmament.
Speaking at the opening of the session, UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Nakamitsu Izumi emphasized the threats ofnuclear weaponsIn terms of the humanitarian and environmental aspects, there is no justification for the use of nuclear weapons. In addition, the Deputy Secretary-General stated that more and more countries are participating in activities using outer space, so countries need to discuss and develop standards in this area.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Tra - Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations affirmed Vietnam's consistent stance of supporting all efforts to disarm and non-proliferate nuclear weapons, and informed that Vietnam had fulfilled its notification obligations as stipulated in Article 2 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) after the Treaty officially came into effect. In addition, the Ambassador also affirmed the rights of countries to research, develop and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Regarding the use of outer space, the Ambassador welcomed the UN General Assembly's adoption of a Resolution establishing an Open-Ended Working Group to discuss threats posed by activities in outer space, thereby making recommendations on norms, rules and principles for responsible behavior of states in the use of outer space./.
