Vietnam and NGOs cooperate to protect the environment

Foreign NGOs pledge to consider cooperation strategies with Vietnam on environmental protection issues.

Within the framework of the 3rd International Conference on Cooperation between Vietnam and Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations, on November 28th in Hanoi, a workshop on environmental protection, climate change response and natural disasters was held. The workshop was attended by more than 100 delegates from foreign non-governmental organizations and relevant ministries and branches.

This is a workshop in a series of 8 workshops on 8 topics that Vietnam has identified as the most important to strengthen cooperation with foreign NGOs in the coming time.

Let's join hands to protect the environment

The workshop aimed to evaluate the results of cooperation in environmental protection, climate change response and natural disasters between Vietnam and foreign NGOs in the period of 2003 - 2013, achievements, difficulties and challenges, lessons learned; identify measures to enhance information exchange and improve the effectiveness of cooperation in this field.

At the workshop, foreign NGOs presented their plans for cooperation with Vietnam in the next 10 years. Some foreign NGOs will reconsider their strategies and plans for operations in Vietnam.

The role of foreign NGOs appears to be declining in direct implementation but increasing in advocacy and building local organizations. In the coming period, foreign NGOs will increasingly engage with the private sector in DRR, CCA, emergency aid; some foreign NGOs will be localized, while still maintaining their international identity and connections.

At the Workshop, foreign NGOs made a number of recommendations for Vietnam such as: simplifying administrative procedures; adjusting from a management mechanism to a partnership relationship; creating a mechanism for foreign NGOs in the process of consulting on strategic planning, policies and legislation; creating conditions to institutionalize the increase in the number of local organizations and NGOs operating in the field of environmental protection.
