The latest statistics from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) show that the number of foreign students in Japan as of May 1, 2014 increased by 9.5%, adding 16,010 people to 184,155 people compared to the same period last year.

Among these international students, the number of Vietnamese students increased by 91.6%, adding 12,640 people to 26,439 people, nearly doubling in just one year, a record number.

The number of Chinese students decreased by 3,476 but still reached a high of 94,399 while the number of Korean students also decreased by 1,506 to 15,777. Thus, Vietnamese students have surpassed Korean students, holding the second position in the number of international students in Japan.

JASSO said: “Due to political tensions, the number of Chinese and Korean students studying abroad has decreased, and Japanese language schools have actively accepted Vietnamese students. Vietnam is also showing more interest in Japanese as Japanese companies are penetrating the Vietnamese market.”

Meanwhile, the Japanese Ministry of Education said on February 27 that the number of Japanese studying abroad at the university level in 2012 increased to 61,138 people, 2,637 more than the previous year; however, this number is only three-quarters of the peak of 82,945 people in 2004.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Education, the above results were achieved thanks to the Ministry's support for international students. Accordingly, the Ministry expanded the scholarship program for Japanese students to study abroad for short periods and will continue to encourage students to study abroad.

Regarding the study abroad destinations chosen by Japanese students, China is the top destination with 21,126 students, an increase of 3,165 people compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of Japanese students studying in the US was 19,568 and the UK was 3,633, down compared to the previous year./.
