Associate Professor-PhD Nguyen Lan Cuong, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Archaeological Association, said that while excavating at the Dong Dau archaeological site in Yen Lac town, Vinh Phuc province, archaeologists discovered many valuable artifacts, especially a tomb with human remains at a depth of more than 3 meters.
Initial assessment of archaeologists, this remains is of a man, about 1.6m tall.
The excavation was conducted by the Vietnam Archaeological Association in coordination with the Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Phuc from December 10, 2012 to present.
Stone axe set of Phung Nguyen culture.
The remains are characterized by large eye sockets, intact skull, arm bones, shoulder blades... The front teeth are gone, but according to scientists, in the past, Phung Nguyen people had a custom of pulling out their front teeth among adult men.
That is one of the bases for determining that the recently excavated man belongs to the Phung Nguyen period, about 3,500 years ago.
Currently, scientists in coordination with the provincial authorities have cleaned the remains, bundled them in wood and plaster, and will bring them to the Vinh Phuc Provincial Museum. In addition, they continue to invite research institutes, scientists and professionals to measure the index, based on scientific grounds to determine more clearly and accurately the above remains, and to carry out scientific processing and preservation for long-term preservation, serving visitors and researchers...
Many other typical artifacts such as stone axes, stone grinding tables, jewelry bracelets, ceramic beads, bronze arrows, pottery, bronze files, jewelry made from horns and animal bones... were also discovered during this excavation and according to scientists, the artifacts belong to the Dong Dau, Go Mun and Phung Nguyen cultural layers.
Initially, experts analyzed and made comments based on the excavated artifacts. It can be said that Dong Dau is not only a large-scale relic site but also a site with a thick cultural layer and rich artifacts, ranking first in Vietnam, including all four cultural stages of the Hung King period, the lowest layer belongs to Phung Nguyen culture, the middle layer belongs to Dong Dau culture, the upper layer belongs to Go Mun culture, and many types of tools belonging to Dong Son culture have been found in the upper layers of these three cultural layers.
The Dong Dau site is clearly divided. The East is where people lived, while the Southwest is where ancient Vietnamese people from the Phung Nguyen period were buried. Excavation work here will continue./.
