With vitamin B group drugs, we are more familiar with names like vitamin B1, B6, B12… but rarely hear the name vitamin B5 (also known as pantothenic acid). So what is vitamin B5 and what are its effects?

Vitamin B5 is an antioxidant that is essential for helping the body convert food into fuel for energy production; essential for healthy skin, hair, eyes and liver. In addition, vitamin B5 is also important for the production of red blood cells, as well as sex and stress-related hormones produced in the adrenal glands and maintaining a healthy digestive system, helping the body use other vitamins...

Vitamin B5 is abundant in meat, green vegetables, eggs, milk...

In humans, vitamin B5 is mainly obtained from foods such as meat, vegetables, cereals, eggs and milk... These are foods rich in vitamin B5.

According to the US National Academy of Sciences, the appropriate amount of vitamin B5 for adults is about 5mg/day, increasing to 6mg in pregnant women and 7mg in breastfeeding women.

Vitamin B5 deficiency is rare, and usually occurs when other B vitamins are deficient at the same time. However, if this vitamin is deficient, the patient will have symptoms such as drowsiness, fatigue, headache, paresthesia in the legs and arms accompanied by increased reflexes and weakness of the lower limbs, cardiovascular and digestive disorders, mood changes and increased susceptibility to infection. Therefore, when vitamin B5 is deficient, a multivitamin containing vitamin B5 should be used.

In addition, vitamin B5 is also used in some cases of peripheral neuritis, leg cramps in pregnant women and alcoholics, burning feet syndrome and glossitis that do not improve when treated with other vitamins. Dexpanthenol spray (an alcohol derivative of D-pantothenic acid) is also indicated for treating skin burns. It should be noted that dexpanthenol is a drug included in the List of drugs used mainly in medical examination and treatment facilities in 2008.

In addition to the foam spray, the drug also comes in a topical cream form to treat itching and other minor skin conditions. When used topically to treat itching and skin conditions, apply a 2% dexpanthenol cream to the affected area once or twice a day, or more often if needed. The drug also comes in tablet, injection, and intravenous infusion forms. Dexpanthenol can prolong bleeding time and should be used with caution in people with hemophilia or other bleeding risks. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is generally not toxic. However, dexpanthenol can cause mild allergic reactions such as itching and diarrhea (but this is rare). Dexpanthenol should be discontinued if an allergic reaction occurs.
