Kaspersky Lab experts have just announced the results of research on mobile threats in 2013.

Accordingly, nearly 145,000 new malicious programs were discovered in 2013, 3 times the number of 2012 with 40,059 samples. As of January 2014, Kaspersky Lab's malware collection had 190,000 mobile malware samples.

In addition, 98.1% of mobile malware samples detected in 2013 attacked Android devices. Approximately 4 million malicious applications were used by cybercriminals to spread malware on Android devices. A total of 10 million malicious Android applications were detected in 2012 and 2013.

The five countries with the highest number of attacked users were: Russia (40%), India (8%), Vietnam (4%), Ukraine (4%) and the UK (3%).

The main goal of mobile malware in 2013 was to steal money. The number of malware variants designed for fraud, the number of bank card information thefts and money from bank accounts increased 20-fold. Meanwhile, 2,500 infections caused by banking Trojans were stopped.

Banking Trojans are the most dangerous mobile malware for users today. Several Trojans were discovered in 2013 that were more focused on stealing money from bank accounts than from the victim's mobile account, and this trend has led to huge losses for users worldwide.

“Today, most banking Trojans attack users in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. However, this situation will not last long, criminals will continue to exploit bank accounts, so the activity of mobile banking Trojans will become stronger in other countries in 2014. We all know Perkel, an Android Trojan that attacked customers of many large banks in Europe, as well as the famous malware from Korea, Wroba,” commented Victor Chebeshev, a virus analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
