The play is set in the historical context of the 8th century, captivating the audience through poetic slices of the life of the national hero, the talented king Mai Hac De.
The Cai Luong play "Mai Hac De" was performed at the Au Co Arts Center (Dong Da, Hanoi) on the evening of January 27, attracting 1,000 spectators. |
The play was written by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky and directed by artist Trieu Trung Kien. The content recreates the historical character Mai Thuc Loan (aka Mai Hac De) from his childhood until he became a hero who drove out the Tang invaders. He organized the Hoan Chau uprising and brought 10 years of independence under the Northern domination to the Giao Chi people. |
The scene of Mai Hac De talking with the soul of poet Vuong Bot (Tang Dynasty). This is a unique creation of the author based on some local legends about Vuong Bot dying in a shipwreck while visiting his father, the governor of Giao Chau, and the local people built a temple to worship him in Nghe An. |
Most of the actors of the Vietnam Opera House were mobilized for this play (about 150 people). |
The play also features a very real, beautiful and touching love story between Mai Thuc Loan and Dinh Thi Ngoc To - the talented and beautiful daughter of Dinh The (Mai Thuc Loan's adoptive father). In it, the main roles such as Mai Hac De and Dinh Thi Ngoc To were given to the "golden voices" of the theater such as Quang Khai and Minh Ly. |
With a large cast, using modern equipment and attracting famous names such as painter Doan Bang and musician Trong Dai, the investment budget for the play is up to billions of dong. |
Author Nguyen The Ky shared: "Mai Hac De lived 13 centuries ago and there are very few works about him. Therefore, I want contemporary audiences to have the opportunity to easily learn more and share their feelings about this hero." |
Mai Hac De is built in the direction of a simple farmer with strong will, not the image of a majestic, powerful person. |
The play consists of 8 scenes, covering the period from Mai Thuc Loan's birth to when he broke the yoke of the Tang Dynasty and won independence for the country. The script focuses on the period from his 20s to his 40s when the Hoan Chau uprising succeeded. |
Mai Hac De was just a local chieftain who stood up to unite all 32 states in An Nam, and at the same time established relations with three neighboring countries: Lam Ap, Chan Lap, and Kim Lan, with a combined naval and land force of up to 400,000 people. |
Meritorious Artist Vuong Ha has retired behind the scenes for many years, she has decided to return to take on the role of Bach Van - a role that requires acting talent to be able to portray the character's inner thoughts. |
Coming from a poor background, with his great intelligence, Mai Thuc Loan rose up to defeat the Tang invaders and their henchmen, creating a heroic page in the history of building and defending the Fatherland. |
An image honoring Vietnamese women with the image of Bach Van pointing out and questioning the protector Quang So Khach. She sacrificed herself to become the enemy's concubine to show her filial piety and serve her country, preferring to die rather than suffer the humiliation of losing her country. |
That is also the image of the heroic woman of Duong Lam village - Pham Thi Uyen, who bravely fought against foreign invaders no less than men. |
The uprising was a glorious victory, with the support of the people, Mai Thuc Loan proclaimed himself emperor, taking the name Mai Hac De. After each scene, the actors always received big applause from the audience. Many opinions say that, after 'Khau Vai Love Story' from 2013 until now, there has been a good and attractive cai luong play in terms of both content and art quality. |
The play will continue to be shown on January 28 and 29 at Au Co Theater (8 Huynh Thuc Khang, Hanoi), and will tour Nghe An on the occasion of the 1302nd anniversary of the Hoan Chau Uprising, on March 3 and 4. |
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung shared his joy with author Nguyen The Ky and director Trieu Trung Kien. The success of the play contributed to bringing audiences closer to traditional performing genres such as Cai Luong. |
