When wife gives birth, husband gets 5-7 days off

Withdrawing the proposal to increase the retirement age, the latest draft of the Social Insurance Law (amended) has added a provision allowing husbands to take 5-7 days off when their wives give birth.

On the afternoon of August 5, at a discussion on reform contents in the draft Law on Social Insurance (amended), Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Nga - Director of the Department of Social Insurance (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs) - said that the drafting agency had withdrawn the content related to the proposal to increase the retirement age from the draft Law on Social Insurance (amended).

According to Ms. Nga, one of the reforms of the draft Law on Social Insurance (amended) is the addition of subjects participating in social insurance.

Accordingly, for compulsory social insurance, the subjects of employees working under labor contracts of less than three months will be added. For voluntary social insurance, the subjects will be expanded in the direction of not controlling the ceiling age of participation, and there will be a policy to support voluntary social insurance contributions.

Regarding maternity leave, the draft adds a provision that male workers whose wives give birth are entitled to five working days off for normal birth and seven working days for cesarean section.
