Apple peel helps prevent aging

Eating an apple a day can slow down aging. According to medical research recently published in the US, apple peels will help prevent muscle aging.

Apple peel contains compounds that help reverse the aging process of the body.

Scientists from the University of Iowa, USA, said that a chemical found in apple peels can turn the muscles of the elderly back to their prime after just two months of treatment. Both apple peels and green tomatoes contain natural chemical essences that can help tired and aging muscles turn back the clock.

The team hopes the discovery could lead to new therapies to help older people stay healthy and live longer.

Age-related senescence is caused by a protein called ATF4. ATF4 alters gene expression, causing proteins needed to maintain muscle strength to decrease in number and leading to muscle weakness.

It appears that a natural compound found in apples and green tomatoes can reduce ATF4 activity, scientists from the University of Iowa told the journal Biological Chemistry.

"One of them is ursolic acid, which is found in apple peel, and the other is tomatidine, which is extracted from green tomatoes," said Christopher Adams, professor of medicinal chemistry and senior author of the study.

“Muscle weakness or atrophy is the biggest problem that is easily recognized, significantly affecting quality of life and health,” he said.

In initial tests on older mice, ursolic acid and tomatidine significantly reduced age-related muscle weakness and atrophy, increasing muscle mass by 10% and improving “muscle quality” by 30% after just two months.

By reducing ATF4 activity, ursolic acid and tomatidine allow skeletal muscle to recover from the effects of aging.

"Based on these results, it can be affirmed that ursolic acid and tomatidine have great potential as tools to deal with muscle weakness and atrophy during aging," added Professor Christopher Adams.
