(Baonghean) -On March 11, the Thanh Chuong District Protective Forest Management Board (Nghe An) said that a company in Hanoi is requesting to transfer a nearly 40-year-old elephant from this center to Hanoi to prepare for the celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

In 1976, Thanh Chuong Forestry received the above mentioned female elephant and a male elephant to domesticate and use for pulling and logging timber from the forest. In 1991, the male elephant was trapped by people with drugs, had its tusks cut off and died.

Now Thanh Chuong Forestry has been transformed into Thanh Chuong District Protective Forest Management Board and no longer exploits forest timber, so the female elephant has ended its career of hauling timber. For nearly 35 consecutive years, Mr. Nguyen Van Tan (an officer of Thanh Chuong Protective Forest Management Board) has been the one who tamed, controlled and closely associated with the above elephant. Currently, the elephant is being raised in Thap Liep forest, Thanh Son commune (Thanh Chuong).

After the elephant performs to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, it will be taken to an elephant rescue center for further care.
