VTV will be allowed to broadcast the Asian Games competitions taking place in Indonesia on the condition that it can broadcast all advertisements and commentary intact.

Mr. Nguyen Ha Nam - Head of the Editorial Secretariat of Vietnam Television (VTV) said that the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has agreed to let VTV broadcast the 2018 Asiad. "The agreement between the two units will be signed this morning, after that VOV will guide VTV on technical aspects," said Mr. Nam.

This leader informed that VTV will be able to broadcast all the competitions of the Asian Games taking place in Indonesia, including men's football. This unit does not have to pay any fees, just needs to broadcast the entire contents from VOV, including commentary, advertising... After completing the contract, VTV will have an official announcement, a detailed broadcast schedule of the competitions at ASIAD 2018, expected on VTV6 channel.

On the afternoon of August 21, VOV announced that it has acquired the broadcasting rights of the 2018 Asian Games in Vietnam. Viewers can watch the tournament in Indonesia on VTC1, VTC3, VTC9, VOVTV, Viettel TV. Listeners can also listen to live coverage of the events on VOV radio channels. VOV's copyright includes content broadcast on mobile platforms, the Internet and applications for smart TVs.

Mr. Nguyen The Ky - General Director of VOV said that he is willing to share the copyright of ASIAD 2018 but the units need to clearly state the source and keep the status quo from VOV. "To serve the majority of fans, VOV agrees to share the copyright and images of ASIAD 2018 with other units. However, the rebroadcasting and quoting of images must remain the same because there are legal issues in the contract with the partner, we cannot change", Mr. Ky said.

Previously, the copyright of the Asian Games was a matter of concern for many days before this year's congress began. VTV, the unit leading the negotiations to buy the copyright of major tournaments, refused because the partner KJSM offered too high a price.

KJSM also rejected VTV’s proposal to buy a separate package, broadcasting only men’s football matches. The Korean company wanted to sell the whole package, with the initial price said to be around 10 million dollars – 10 times higher than the copyright for the 2014 Asian Games.

According to some sources, the final figure they finalized with VOV was under $2 million.

Copyrights for broadcasting major world sporting events in Vietnam have always been a hot topic in recent years because prices have been increasing rapidly. Meanwhile, TV stations have to consider carefully because they have to be financially independent.
