Kien Giang fishing boat shot: Fishermen advised to be absolutely careful
On the afternoon of September 14, the Department of Fisheries Surveillance, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, provided information about the incident in which a fishing boat of Kien Giang fishermen was shot at by a foreign ship, resulting in one death.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Anh, Director of the Fisheries Information Center, Department of Fisheries, said that this could be a group of armed robbers who robbed fishing boats to demand ransom.
According to the incident, at about 3:30 p.m. on September 11, there were 3 pairs of KG ships (6 ships) practicing double trawling including: Ship KG 94005TS and KG 9376TS owned by Mr. Bui Van Minh (Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province), Ship KG 94059TS and KG94058TS owned by Mr. Duong The Truyen (Rach Gia City), Ship KG 94811TS and KG 94812 owned by Mr. Tran Van Bay (Chau Thanh District, Kien Giang Province).
While these 6 ships were fishing in the area with coordinates 7º01'00N - 103º14'.00E, a gray composite boat with an unknown serial number, about 10m long, about 3m wide, equipped with guns, appeared. 5-6 people jumped onto the fishing boat KG 94005TS captained by Mr. Bui Minh Tuan and confiscated the walkie-talkie.
At this time, the remaining 5 fishing boats fishing near the area intended to rescue fishing boat KG 94005TS but were chased by a group of people on a composite boat and shot at boat KG 94811TS captained by Mr. Nguyen Hung Cuong, causing Mr. Cuong to be shot in the right thigh, breaking his bone.
The group of people on the composite boat continued to chase the remaining boats and used guns to shoot at the fishing boat KG 94059TS, captained by Mr. Duong The Truyen, causing crew member Ngo Van Sinh (1977), residing in Vinh Hoa Hiep commune, Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang province, to be shot in the head and die on the spot. When they saw that there were dead people on the fishing boat, the composite boat left and did not shoot at any fishing boats.
Fishing boat KG 94811TS took Mr. Nguyen Hung Cuong to DK1/10 platform for emergency treatment, then went to Kien Giang to take the injured person to Kien Giang General Hospital. Meanwhile, boat KG 94059TS went to Tac Cau port, Chau Thanh district to bring Mr. Ngo Van Sinh's body to his family for burial.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quoc Anh, in July and August, in the Truong Sa fishing grounds, there were also two incidents of Vietnamese fishing boats being boarded by strange ships. However, when they saw the presence of Vietnamese law enforcement forces on board, these subjects changed direction and asked for "oil".
Mr. Anh recommends that in the coming time, fishermen going out to sea to catch seafood must be absolutely careful, only fish in the waters under our country's sovereignty and organize into production groups and teams. Currently, countries in the region are tightening management of the sea, such as Thailand, which has established a Steering Committee for controlling vessels at sea, increased inspections, handling, and severely punishing fishing vessels that violate the country's territorial waters.
