Specialized cultivation area on Nam Xuan land
(Baonghean) - Nam Xuan is a semi-mountainous commune of Nam Dan district. Its production land fund is not large, but thanks to its reasonable and effective arrangement and use, it has raised the land use coefficient to one of the highest in the district...
We arrived in Nam Xuan at the right time when farmers were planting and taking care of vegetables to sell for Tet. The fields were bustling with the atmosphere of plowing, harrowing, and fertilizing in preparation for the spring rice crop. In the fields of Mung, Hamlet 7, Ms. Le Thi Huong was welcoming water to the fields, excitedly saying: “The fields have been converted, so irrigation work to bring water to the fields is convenient. Every year, on these 3 sao of land, my family grows 2 stable rice crops and arranges a third crop of vegetables or winter corn, so economic efficiency has increased significantly. The hybrid rice yield is high, over 3.1 quintals/sao”.
Taking us to visit the agricultural cultivation areas of the hamlet, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Agricultural Extension Officer of Hamlet 6, Nam Xuan, said: The whole hamlet has 40 hectares of agricultural land, the commune has formed 2 main production areas: rice area and specialized color area. In recent years, the hamlet has invested in a concrete irrigation canal project, seeds, applying scientific care and pest control methods, following the right process to create favorable conditions for developing multi-system vegetables according to the rotation formula of 3 color crops, 1 rice crop/year. Spring crop is kohlrabi, bitter melon, summer-autumn crop is rice, winter-spring crop is cucumber, kohlrabi, corn. Chives are identified as a strength because they are easy to grow, suitable for the land and soil. The harvest time for one planting lasts 2 years. From growing chives, people harvest no less than 3 million VND/month/sao. Thanks to sticking to the land and the seasons, the specialized vegetable fields of the people earn over 50 million VND/ha/year.

Nam Xuan is one of the three pilot communes of Nam Dan district that completed the land conversion early. After land consolidation, people have 1-3 plots/household (previously there were 6-7 plots/household). The whole commune currently has over 1,200 hectares of natural land, of which 573 hectares of agricultural land include 320 hectares of rice, 146 hectares of colored land, and 64 hectares of ponds and lakes. Located in the semi-mountainous plain, the commune's land is quite diverse, creating favorable conditions for planning production areas. The commune currently has 5 dams and 8 active water pumping stations. Thanks to contributions from the people and partly from the source of irrigation fee compensation, the commune has built over 12 km of solid concrete canals. This is an important premise to create momentum for farmers to produce and cultivate.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Thuan - Head of the Commune's Agriculture Department said: "The commune's agricultural land fund is not large, but taking advantage of favorable natural and social conditions, the commune has arranged the crop structure and crop rotation formulas on suitable fields. Absolutely do not leave the land fund empty, causing waste, thereby increasing the agricultural land use coefficient. Following the spirit of Resolution 09 of the District Party Committee on the policy of converting crop structure, the commune has proactively developed projects and annual conversion plans right from the beginning of the production season. From there, mobilize farmers to convert ineffective rice land to growing vegetables, develop appropriate crop rotation formulas to promote the potential of the land fund. The commune is interested in attracting from projects, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center in introducing advanced high-quality hybrid rice varieties, vegetable varieties, and chives. In particular, the Tre Viet bitter melon variety after being put into cultivation by the people is evaluated as the melon variety with the highest yield, easy to sell in the market, and has a good price. all good
Learning about specific ways to effectively promote the potential of agricultural land in Nam Xuan in the past time, it is known that: The entire agricultural land area of the commune is divided into 3 specific areas: Low-lying areas spread evenly in 12 hamlets with a total area of nearly 200 hectares are arranged with a structure of 2 rice crops, which are spring and summer-autumn crops. For the Mung area, the area is nearly 180 hectares, mainly concentrated from hamlets 4 to 7, easy to irrigate, not affected by rain and floods, suitable for planting 2 rice crops, 1 color crop or 2 rice crops, 1 winter corn crop each year. For the specialized color area, the total area is nearly 80 hectares concentrated in the foothills, suitable for specialized cultivation, rotating 4 crops/year of short-term color crops such as spring kohlrabi, summer-autumn bitter melon, winter cucumber. According to the people, production in the color area brings the main and most stable source of income.
Thanks to the initiative in crop season and reasonable crop structure on each land, Nam Xuan is now considered a leading locality in using and promoting the efficiency of agricultural land funds. Mr. Nguyen Huu Son - Head of the Commune Agricultural Extension Board said: "The whole commune has planned 6 specialized fields for commercial vegetable production, an average of 3-5 hectares/field, with an income of 50-60 million VND/ha, 5 hectares of chives grown according to the safe vegetable model, giving high income. According to farmers' calculations, after 2 years of implementing the conversion and exploiting the potential of agricultural land funds in the spirit of Resolution 09 of the District Party Committee, the land use coefficient in the commune has increased from 1.9 to 2.5 times. In the coming time, the commune will continue to mobilize people to convert crop structures, especially ineffective rice land; integrate into the New Rural Program to build 20 hectares of safe vegetables on fertile land...".
