Vietnam Cooperative Bank website hacked, price set at 100,000 USD
The attack on a Vietnamese bank's website has once again raised alarms about the security of the financial sector in a context where hackers are increasingly targeting this type of business.
On the evening of October 13, the website of the Co-op Bank of Vietnam at https://co-opbank.vn/ was hacked.
Roaddata?
Information left by the hacker shows that the hacker named Sogo Nakamoto announced that he would sell 275,000 customer data for $100,000 and the buyer must pay in Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash.
Whether or not 275,000 data records were leaked remains a mystery. However, it is clear that the hacking of Co-opbank has left behind signs that this is a serious incident.
As of 12 noon on October 14, Co-opbank's website was inaccessible.

Previously, in April 2018, public opinion was also stirred up by the case of Vietcombank's website being hacked and leaving behind two parody verses: "After a hundred years, Kieu is still Kieu, it is natural for students to retake the exam."
Initial comments on the Co-opbank case, Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Vice President in charge of network security of Bkav, said that the website of the Vietnam Co-op Bank uses the open source platform WordPress. In terms of security, using this platform has two sides: The security hole is made public, but this also makes it very easy for hackers to know through their scanning system and carry out attacks.
Therefore, Mr. Tuan Anh said that banks often use other platforms to create websites. In the case of using WordPress, the technical team must constantly review to avoid unfortunate situations that may occur.
Mr. Tran Quang Chien, CEO of CyStack Security, said that when building and operating a website without an effective security plan, it is very easy for vulnerabilities to exist. And, hackers will exploit these vulnerabilities to attack.
Can sue
According to statistics from CyStack's CyStack Attack Map system (a system that tracks hacked websites worldwide), every month hundreds of websites in Vietnam are hacked and taken over by hackers.

Meanwhile, Mr. Vo Do Thang, General Director of Athena Group, said that in the above case, the website of the Cooperative Bank was hacked. And, the data could be taken out.
“When customer data is leaked, it will cause serious damage, not only to the bank's reputation,” Mr. Thang said.
This expert believes that, in addition to account information and personal information being leaked, users also face the exposure of private information such as: transaction amount; deposit amount; loan amount. And, when this information is made public online, it will have a significant impact on production, business and even the daily activities of customers.
Therefore, on the one hand, Mr. Thang believes that banks must absolutely ensure the safety of customer information. On the other hand, in case the information is leaked, customers can sue the bank to compensate for the damages as analyzed above. And, this will make banks pay more attention to their security.
