According to AFP, the World Trade Organization (WTO) on December 10 approved Tajikistan's participation in the United Nations' global trade organization, thereby ending 11 years of arduous negotiations and paving the way for the Central Asian country to become the 159th member of the WTO.

Speaking at a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon praised the WTO's decision and called it a "milestone in Tajikistan's history."

He declared that Tajikistan's application for WTO accession in 2001 was "a step in the right direction for Tajikistan as it moves toward a market economy," and asserted that WTO membership would help promote "economic growth and prosperity."

The WTO said Tajikistan will become a full member of the organization 30 days after Dushanbe ratifies the agreement, expected around June 7, 2013.

Accordingly, Tajikistan will become the second Central Asian country to join the WTO after Kyrgyzstan, whose terms of accession were approved by the WTO working group last October./.
