Building a 'model dike' to respond to extreme natural disasters

(Baonghean) - In the context of increasingly obvious negative impacts of climate change, the construction of dykes that meet quality, function and design requirements, launching a movement to build model dykes is a positive policy.

Vinh dike is part of the Lam riverside tourist route system connecting Cua Lo - Cua Hoi - Vinh - Hung Nguyen - Nam Dan; along the entire length of nearly 13km, there has been no encroachment on the dike corridor, no significant landslides or erosion points have been detected. Vinh dike has long been built, protected and selected by the Irrigation Department to build a model dike route.

The Irrigation Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) also selected Vinh Dike Management Unit to build a "Typical Dike Management Unit of the province" and Hung Nguyen Dike Management Unit (the unit with the dike section from K84+500 to K86+000) to register the "Model Dike Line" of the province.

The construction of a model dike line aims to strengthen the management and safety of the dike system, reduce violations of dike laws, and build green, clean, and beautiful dikes. Training and improving the qualifications and professional skills, cultivating the qualities and spirit of those working in dike management. In addition, creating conditions to strengthen facilities, equipment, supplies, and means for the force participating in dike management, improving work efficiency. Raising awareness of authorities at all levels, organizations, businesses, and people related to dikes.

When all criteria are met and especially the dike works are guaranteed, we will be assured in preventing and fighting natural disasters, floods and storms. In addition, the reduction of dike violations and the improvement of the environmental landscape are very practical for the people.

The biggest difficulty in building a model dike is funding; along with that, people's awareness and understanding of the law is still limited, so compliance with dike protection regulations is not high; management work faces many difficulties"...

Mr. Le Dinh Long - Deputy Head of Nghe An Irrigation Sub-Department said: "From now until 2020, the Irrigation Sub-Department will coordinate to complete all the criteria of the "model dike" registered for construction. From there, replicate and create a spreading effect to contribute to firmly protecting the dikes in the province; effectively promote the dike system to serve socio-economic development.
