The initial cause of the accident was determined to be oil spilled from the engine of the truck with license plate 37C – 041.26, driven by Mr. Tran Duc Hai (born 1984), from Hamlet 10, Bac Lam, Dien Lam Commune, Dien Chau District, making the road very slippery. When Mr. Ho Ba Than, riding a motorbike carrying 300 chicken eggs from Quynh Luu to Que Phong for sale, passed through this section of road, he suddenly slipped, fell, and his motorbike burst into flames.
Reportedly, the vehicle driven by Mr. Hai was traveling from Dien Chau to Que Phong on National Highway 48a at kilometer 98 + 300 in the early morning when the engine block cracked, causing engine oil to spill onto the road. This is a steep, winding section of road, and combined with the rain and the wide oil slick, it became a "trap" for road users.
