On the afternoon of June 3, Lieutenant Colonel Ha Ngoc Viet, Chief of the Cha Lo International Border Guard Station (Quang Binh), said that driver Nguyen Duc Tu (26 years old, residing in Nghi Loc district, Nghe An) was being detained by Laos to serve the investigation of the Khanh Don passenger bus explosion in Khammouane province (Laos), 10 km from Cha Lo international border gate.
Immediately after the explosion, driver Tu reported to Lao authorities and admitted that the vehicle was carrying round firecrackers the size of ping pong balls. The amount of firecrackers was very large, but there is no specific number.
The case has now been transferred to the Lao Police Department for investigation. Vietnamese authorities have repeatedly wanted to meet with the driver, but due to the strict investigation process led by Laos, they have not been able to approach him.
Currently, all injured and dead people have been transferred to Vietnam for treatment and burial according to custom.
At 4:00 a.m. on June 2, a 35-seat passenger bus of Khanh Don bus company running from Tha Khet (Laos) to Nghi Loc district (Nghe An) suddenly exploded about 10 km from Cha Lo international border gate.
There were 13 people on the bus (11 passengers, the driver and the bus assistant). The explosion killed 7 people from Nghe An and one from Nam Dinh on the spot; 3 others were injured. The driver and the bus assistant escaped unharmed.
