The Russian military said today that an accidental fire incident during a live-fire exercise at a training ground near St. Petersburg left one soldier dead and five injured, RT reported.
A shell fired from a tank flew off its intended trajectory, bounced off the ground and exploded near a group of soldiers' training site, causing casualties.
A military investigation committee has been set up to investigate the cause of the accident, while injured soldiers were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Russian military has recently increased the intensity of its exercises and drills amid increasingly tense relations with the West. Russia plans to hold a large-scale joint exercise with Belarus called "Zapad 2017" from September 14 to 20, with the participation of about 100,000 soldiers and many modern weapons.
