According to the Russian news agency TASS, representatives from Russia, the EU and Ukraine have begun trilateral consultations on gas. The main agenda item will be the extension of the contract for gas transit from Russia to Europe through Ukraine after 2019. This is a key issue because the current 10-year agreement will expire at the end of 2019.
According to the above source, the participants in the tripartite meeting include: Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, Gazprom CEO Aleksei Miller, European Commission (EC) Vice President in charge of the energy alliance Maros Sefcovic, Ukrainian Energy and Environmental Protection Minister Aleksey Orzhel and Naftogaz CEO Andrei Kobolev.
Earlier, Sefcovic said the EC would push for a long-term transit contract for Kiev during consultations on September 19, to increase the attractiveness of Ukraine's gas transport system, in order to attract investment in its modernization.
