September 3, 2012 16:36

(Baonghean) -On August 30, the People's Court of Yen Thanh District held a public first-instance trial of a criminal case on bribery. The defendant is Bui Anh Duc (born in 1975), residing in Vinh City, former judge of the People's Court of Yen Thanh District.

According to the indictment, in April 2012, Bui Anh Duc was assigned by the Chief Justice of Yen Thanh District People's Court to preside over the criminal trial of Ngo Xuan Thao's "embezzlement of property" case. Before bringing the case to trial, through contact with Bui Anh Duc in the office, the defendant's family asked Bui Anh Duc to help reduce the sentence. Bui Anh Duc agreed but set a condition that the defendant's family must give Duc 60 million VND, the defendant's sentence would be reduced to 3-4 years. Due to difficult economic circumstances, the defendant's family could only borrow 15 million VND. On April 24, the defendant's family went to the agency to give the above amount of money to Bui Anh Duc. When the two people left Duc's office, Yen Thanh District Police raided and arrested Duc, at which time Duc had put 2 envelopes containing 15 million VND in his personal cabinet. Through an emergency search, the police also confiscated an envelope containing 4 million VND from Duc's family that was given to Duc on the morning of April 23.

After 1 day of trial, the court sentenced defendant Bui Anh Duc to 5 years in prison.
