Please accept the death penalty to set an example for others.
Tuan wants the court to sentence him to death for the crime of killing his lover while high on drugs "to set an example for others".
On August 24, Ho Chi Minh City People's Court sentenced Dang Van Tuan (46 years old) to death for murder.
According to the panel of judges, just because of an unclear threat, Tuan killed Ms. Hanh, and carried out the barbaric act of disposing of the victim into many parts. The defendant himself had a previous conviction for illegal drug trafficking, and after being released from prison for less than a year, he continued to commit an especially serious crime... so the highest penalty should be applied.
The case shocked public opinion when many parts of a woman's body were discovered in a nylon bag in the center of Saigon nearly 2 years ago.

Investigation results determined that in 2013, after completing a 7-year prison sentence related to drugs, Tuan and his son moved in with his younger brother named Thanh (38 years old) in the house left by his parents in Cau Kho ward, District 1. Although his younger brother was living as husband and wife with Hanh (41 years old), Tuan still developed feelings for her.
During their time together, Hanh had a conflict with her uncle, so she asked Tuan to pretend to love her aunt so that her husband would be jealous and divorce her. Following his lover's advice, Tuan then fell in love with Hanh's aunt. When Hanh found out, she became jealous and threatened to kill Tuan's entire family.
On the afternoon of September 28, 2014, while smoking meth together, Tuan saw Hanh talking on the phone with another man, thinking that Hanh was threatening to call someone to kill his family. Waiting until Hanh was putting on makeup and getting ready for work, he used a wooden stick from behind to hit her head many times, strangling her to death. After committing the crime, Tuan locked the door and did not let Thanh and his son into the house.
Two days later, fearing discovery, Tuan bought a bottle of kerosene and poured it on Ms. Hanh's body to "eliminate the smell of death" and then cut it into pieces and put them in 7 nylon bags. He waited until dawn, threw the pieces on the side of the road at the beginning of the alley and transported them to the foot of Lo Gom Bridge, District 6. When the police arrived, Tuan barricaded himself in the house and cut his wrists, but then threw the keys to the police who came to save him.
In March, the case was brought to trial, but the court returned the case file for further investigation to clarify Tuan's crime scene.
In court, Tuan admitted to committing the crime because he was afraid that Ms. Hanh would "call someone to kill the whole family". He said that he did not have a romantic relationship with Ms. Hanh but "only considered her as a sister", the person Tuan had feelings for was Ms. Hanh's aunt.
Having the last word, Tuan apologized to the victim's family and asked the court to give him the heaviest sentence. "I would like to receive the highest sentence to set an example for those who use drugs and suffer the same consequences as me," he said.
