In connection with the case, 9 other defendants were sentenced to between 6 months and 6 years in prison for concealing criminals and robbery. In addition, the court also sentenced Nguyen Viet Anh (born 1984, former police officer of District 6) for illegally storing and using military weapons.
According to the indictment, Tuan and Minh discussed a plan to use guns to steal money from gamblers during Tet. Tuan and his friends pretended to be police officers and roamed the streets of District 5, District 10 and Binh Tan looking for casinos to raid and take money.
In total, this group carried out 6 cases, appropriating a total of 21.4 million VND from many people, dividing it among themselves. Notably, in the casino robbery that occurred at noon on February 13, 2013, on Cao Dat Street (District 5), while appropriating money from gamblers, Tuan opened fire, injuring one person, with an injury rate of 2%. The gamblers resisted and arrested this police officer when Tuan was taking 2.5 million VND and putting it in his wallet.
Regarding the gun, Tuan said he borrowed it from defendant Viet Anh and only used it to threaten gamblers to get them to give him money. During the robbery at noon on February 13, Tuan fired a warning shot into the air to scare the gamblers, but the bullet flew and injured one person.
