Treatment of pond pollution after floods

(Baonghean) - The recent heavy rains caused by storm No. 10 have caused a total loss of 840 hectares of aquaculture in Quynh Luu district. In addition to economic losses, aquaculture farmers are currently facing the risk of serious water pollution in ponds and lagoons. To ensure conditions for the next shrimp farming season, people are urgently treating the farming environment and repairing damaged ponds and lagoons.

Heavy rains combined with the flood discharge of Vuc Mau lake during storm No. 10 caused a total loss of nearly 100 hectares of shrimp farming in the second crop in Hoi Phuong area, Quynh Thanh commune (Quynh Luu). Over 1 hectare of 40-day-old shrimp farming of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nghiem's family was also flooded. As soon as the water receded, all the shrimp in the pond died, not only losing the shrimp crop, but now Mr. Nghiem also has to face the pollution of the pond. Although he still doesn't know how to pay off the debt of over 150 million VND invested in this shrimp crop, he still has to hire 3-4 workers, along with his family, to focus on pumping mud, cleaning the bottom of the pond, using lime and chlorine to treat and destroy pathogens, and prepare for the next crop.

Currently, hundreds of aquaculture households in Quynh Thanh, Quynh Minh, Quynh Bang, and Quynh Tho communes are focusing on treating the farming environment, renovating ponds and lagoons, and preparing for the new shrimp farming season.

According to statistics from the Flood and Storm Prevention Command of Quynh Luu district, the whole district has over 500 hectares of freshwater aquaculture that have been completely lost, including 280 hectares of white-leg shrimp. Currently, the People's Committee of Quynh Luu district has issued specific instructions and guidance for the aquaculture sector to overcome the consequences and promptly restore production. The immediate urgent issue for the area that has been completely lost, with dead shrimp in the pond, is to properly implement chemical treatment procedures and restore the pond. Particularly for areas that can be overcome, it is necessary to quickly add more breeds or replace suitable farming objects, focusing on care to harvest in time at the end of the year. Particularly for shrimp farming, if farmers have the conditions to stock shrimp off-season, they must strictly implement technical requirements.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Quynh Luu district recommended: "Some places that have conditions for off-season farming in the coming time need to urgently disinfect and detoxify the environment and prepare conditions for early stocking, ensuring cold resistance and farming techniques to avoid diseases and damage due to cold weather".

With the direction of the Fisheries Department and localities, people actively overcome the damage, quickly handle the environment of the farming area to ensure safety. Believe that the next farming season will limit the damage caused by disease to farmed shrimp.
