79-year-old man sexually assaulted 3-year-old girl on appeal
The Supreme People's Court will hear the appeal of Nguyen Danh Vinh (born 1938) for child rape.
On the morning of January 22, the Supreme People's Court opened an appeal trial for Nguyen Danh Vinh (born in 1938, residing in Chu Minh commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi) for child rape.The trial was opened following the appeal of the injured party requesting an increase in the penalty and compensation for damages.

On the evening of January 21, speaking with reporters, Mr. Bui Van M. (father of the abused girl) said: "Child BNBN (born in 2011). The family has received an invitation from the Supreme People's Court to be present in court on the morning of January 22 to participate in the appeal trial of the case in which defendant Nguyen Danh Vinh was accused of child rape.
Mr. M. said: "The family filed an appeal hoping that the appellate panel would consider increasing the sentence for the defendant, because the incident greatly affected the girl's future. In addition, after the incident, the defendant did not show any remorse."
Mr. M. added that the current compensation level is not satisfactory. Since the incident, the defendant has not compensated the victim's family.
Previously, the Hanoi People's Court of First Instance sentenced Nguyen Danh Vinh to 8 years in prison for child rape.
At the first instance trial, the defendant was helped into the courtroom by relatives. During the trial, the defendant's health was not good so the presiding judge allowed him to sit in a chair with relatives supporting him. During the interrogation, the defendant Vinh confessed to the crime.
According to the indictment, the girl N. and the defendant Vinh lived near each other. On the morning of October 5, 2015, because N.'s parents were away, the girl and a group of friends went to Mr. Vinh's house to play. Seeing N. holding a frozen water bottle, the defendant asked her what happened and then invited her to the second floor to get a hammer to break the ice and asked the remaining group of children to go outside. There, the defendant molested and assaulted the girl.
When N. reacted, the defendant said he would give her money to buy gifts and cakes to carry out his acts of abuse. The incident happened shortly after and was reported to the authorities by the victim's family.
At the first instance trial, the victim's family requested that the case be handled according to the law./.
