Tuna exports to Japan drop sharply

Statistics from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) show that in the first 6 months of 2013, Vietnam's tuna export turnover only reached 293.7 million USD, an increase of 2.7% over the same period last year.
The US continues to be the largest import market for Vietnamese tuna, accounting for 37% of the market share, reaching 108.6 million USD, down 15.5% over the same period last year; followed by the EU and Japan.
If in the first 6 months of 2012, Japan was the second largest importer of Vietnamese tuna, in the first half of 2013, Japan dropped to third place. Specifically, the export value of Vietnamese tuna to Japan during this period only reached 31.6 million USD, down 18.4% compared to the same period last year.
Experts say that due to the devaluation of the yen, Japanese tuna importers have not been able to boost tuna imports from other countries, including Vietnam.
