Seafood exports in the first 9 months of the year reached 4.5 billion USD
According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country's seafood export turnover in September is estimated to reach 500 million USD, bringing the total seafood export turnover in the first 9 months of the year to 4.5 billion USD, up 3.5% over the same period in 2011.
The United States maintains its position as the leading import market for Vietnamese seafood.
Although it is forecasted that from now until the end of the year, importers will increase imports of products such as tra fish and shrimp to serve the Christmas season and welcome the New Year 2013, the seafood industry is facing many difficulties due to quality warnings in the EU, Japanese, and American markets...In addition, trade barriers regarding taxes in the EU market and regulations on the use of Ethoxyquin chemicals in Japan have not been resolved, causing difficulties for businesses when exporting to these countries. In addition, seafood businesses lack capital to expand their markets, and diseases in farmed shrimp still occur frequently, affecting raw material sources.
In order to boost exports in the last months of the year, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Management is coordinating with relevant units to handle seafood export shipments that have been warned about quality by competent authorities of Japan, South Korea, the EU and Russia. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will resolutely handle businesses whose seafood products do not ensure food safety and hygiene, causing general impacts on the entire industry. The Ministry will strengthen inspection of urea treatment in marine fish products and will strictly handle it according to regulations.
In addition, the Ministry recommends that sectors coordinate with local authorities to disseminate to businesses and farmers the system of standards and technical regulations for seafood production, business and processing establishments on food safety management.Authorities need to regularly inspect and control the implementation of food safety regulations for production, business and export processing establishments; strictly handle violations of regulations on food quality and safety, and unfair competition that affect the reputation of Vietnamese seafood products and cause damage to the common interests of the community.
