(Baonghean) - General Dinh Bat Tuy - a scholar, a general who was both a scholar and a martial artist, loyal to the king and patriot; one of the "famous generals and good ministers" who made many contributions to the cause of suppressing rebellions, pacifying the people, and stabilizing the country in the 16th century.

One heart for the people

Dinh Bat Tuy was born in the year of Binh Ty (1516) in Bui Khong commune, Hung Nguyen district (now Hung Trung commune, Hung Nguyen district). He was born and raised in a family with a tradition of Confucianism but was very poor. Thanks to the care and education of his parents, from a young age he showed that he was ambitious and studious. When Dinh Bat Tuy was just 13 years old, both his parents died early, a teacher in the village took Dinh Bat Tuy in to raise. Every day, Dinh Bat Tuy helped his teacher sweep tables and chairs, boil water, cook rice, collect firewood, herd buffalo, and cut grass. However, Dinh Bat Tuy still took advantage of his time to study.

Although he was a good student, Dinh Bat Tuy had a hard time in the imperial examinations, failing many times. It was not until 1543 (at the age of 27) that he passed the Huong Cong examination and was appointed as a supervisor of the Imperial Academy under the Mac Dynasty. In the year Giap Dan, the 6th year of Thuan Binh (1554), King Le Trung Tong opened a system of examinations, Dinh Bat Tuy was the top scorer, equivalent to the first place winner. This was the first time since his accession to the throne that King Le Trung Tong opened a talent examination at the Hanh Dien in Van Lai - Thanh Hoa to select talented people. Dinh Bat Tuy was the first person to pass the examination out of 13 people who passed the examination and he was assigned by the king to hold the position of Han Lam Vien Hieu Ly. To repay his parents, teachers and the king, Dinh Bat Tuy worked hard so he was trusted by the king and promoted to the position of "Han Lam Vien Thi The". Because of his many achievements and reputation for virtue during his time at the court, in 1562 King Le Anh Tong assigned Dinh Bat Tuy to the position of "Dong Cac Hieu Thu". Although he was a civil servant with a loyal and patriotic ideology, Dinh Bat Tuy was still concerned about the country's politics.

The royal decree reads: "Tuyen Luc Cong Than, Special Envoy Kim Tu Vinh Loc Dai Phu, Minister of War and Grand Scholar of Dong Cac, Attendant of Kinh Dien, Marquis of Phuc Khe". In 1629 (the first year of the Duc Long era), he was granted the title "Mr. Thuong Thu Khe district duke".

During nearly 10 years (1570 - 1580), Dinh Bat Tuy participated in many battles, contributing to maintaining the Le Dynasty's rear area. Dinh Bat Tuy was not only famous as a talented general, but also good at pacifying the people and restoring the economy such as recruiting displaced people to establish villages, open markets, and build pagodas (people in the Hung Nguyen - Nam Dan areas today still pass on and praise him for opening Hien Son market and renovating Hien Son pagoda (now called Hen market and Hen pagoda, Hung Yen Bac commune). Due to his many contributions, he was appointed by King Le The Tong as Minister of Infantry and concurrently as "Dong Cac Dai Hoc Si ​​Nhap Thi Kinh Dien" and stayed at Hanh Dien Van Lai - Thanh Hoa.

In 1589, Minister Dinh Bat Tuy was entrusted with the important responsibility of escorting King Le The Tong to the battlefield. Despite his old age and poor health, he still worried about and supervised the military provisions for the great march day and night. In the middle of the march, Dinh Bat Tuy fell seriously ill and died on April 17, 1589. After his death, the court posthumously granted Dinh Bat Tuy the title of "Khe Quan Cong", appointed him as a God of Fortune, and ordered the construction of a temple in his hometown for the people to worship.

During his nearly 40 years as an official (1554-1589), Dinh Bat Tuy assisted three generations of Le kings: Le Trung Tong (1554-1555); Le Anh Tong (1556-1572) and Le The Tong (1573-1589). Although he did not fully complete the career of the Le Trung Hung dynasty, Dinh Bat Tuy's name and achievements were recognized by the Le dynasty and national history as "The First Meritorious Official".

These days, coming back to Bui Ngoa village, we can see the excitement of the descendants of the Dinh family in particular, and the people of Hung Trung and Hung Nguyen in general, towards the 500th anniversary of the birth of General Dinh Bat Tuy.

Bui Ngoa Village has 3 relics: Dinh Bat Tuy Temple - the main place to worship the General and his descendants, and Bui Ngoa Communal House, Bui Ngoa Pagoda, all of which worship Dinh Bat Tuy.

In memory of Dinh Bat Tuy's merits and example for the people and the country, the descendants of the Dinh family, starting from Bui Ngoa, have contributed to glorifying the tradition of the family, the clan, the homeland and the country, such as Dinh Bat Tuan, Dinh Bat Sy, Dinh Bat Duat. During the resistance war against the French and the Americans, many descendants of the family participated in the battlefield, hundreds of them are now military officers. The family's tradition of academic achievements is also noteworthy with dozens of people being professors, doctors, masters, etc. The descendants of the Dinh family always have a spirit of solidarity, constantly striving to be more worthy of the ancestors of the family.
