Life sentence for murderer
(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of December 23, at the People's Court of Cua Lo town, the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld the life sentence for Nguyen Nam Khanh (born in 1989, residing in Nghi Truong commune, Nghi Loc).
According to the indictment, Nguyen Nam Khanh is a friend of Dang Le Phuong (born in 1986, residing in Nghi Trung commune, Nghi Loc). During the Lunar New Year 2013, Khanh, Phuong and some others organized a gambling game. During the game, a conflict arose, Phuong threw a deck of cards at Khanh's face. Everyone tried to stop him, so everyone went home.
At around 9pm on February 18, 2013, Nguyen Nam Khanh picked up a gun with 3 bullets in it. Khanh brought the gun to Nguyen Huu Manh's house. Dang Huy Tan (Dang Le Phuong's father) was also present. Khanh and Tan had a conflict and cursed at each other. After being stopped by everyone, Khanh left.
On the way home, Khanh met Mr. Bach Anh Quynh (born in 1982, living in the same neighborhood). Seeing scratches on Khanh's face, Mr. Quynh asked Khanh to tell him the story. After listening, Mr. Quynh told Khanh to go to Mr. Dang Huy Tan's house to reconcile. At Mr. Tan's house, Khanh and the homeowner got into a fight. Khanh immediately pulled out a gun from his pocket and shot Mr. Tan in the back, causing the victim to die on the way to the emergency room. After committing the crime, Khanh fled during the night and was arrested by the police shortly after.

In the first instance trial held on July 24, 2013, the Provincial People's Court sentenced Nguyen Nam Khanh to life in prison for murder. Khanh appealed to the Supreme People's Court for a reduced sentence.
At the appeal hearing, the panel of judges found that Khanh’s actions were hooligan, cold-blooded, and aggressive, and that the defendant himself had a bad personal history (2 previous convictions for robbery), and that he needed to be isolated from society for a long period of time. The panel of judges rejected the appeal and upheld the first instance verdict against Nguyen Nam Khanh.
