Life sentence for husband who killed his wife

(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of May 28, the Supreme People's Court in Hanoi opened a criminal appeal trial to try the murder case against Nguyen Van Thanh (born in 1974, residing in Quynh Ba commune, Quynh Luu).

Defendant Nguyen Van Thanh was escorted out of court.

According to the indictment of the Supreme People's Procuracy, on July 17, 2013, after organizing the wedding of her eldest daughter, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chanh (Thanh's wife) went to visit a neighbor's house. At about 5:00 p.m. the same day, Nguyen Van Thanh prepared a knife and put it in his back and went to look for his wife. Seeing his wife sitting and talking with some neighbors, Thanh went into the house and pulled his wife out to the yard to talk. Fearing that something bad would happen, the neighbor grabbed Ms. Chanh's hand and pulled her back. During the struggle, Nguyen Van Thanh pulled out the knife and stabbed his wife in the left chest, causing Ms. Chanh to die from a punctured heart.

At the first instance trial held on January 17, 2014, the People's Court of Nghe An province sentenced Nguyen Van Thanh to life in prison for murder. Nguyen Van Thanh appealed to the Supreme People's Court for a reduced sentence. However, at the trial, Thanh could not provide a convincing reason for a reduced sentence. After reviewing the entire case, finding that the defendant Nguyen Van Thanh's actions were hooliganism, violence, and were of a particularly serious nature, taking the life of another person, the panel of judges decided to reject the appeal and uphold the first instance sentence against Nguyen Van Thanh.
